Irish Fans Visit Torun Prison
Galway United Supporters Trust were invited on an official visit to Torun Prison, Poland on Friday 8th June. The visit was organized by International House Torun and Toruntips.com.
The group of Irish Soccer fans were accompanied around the prison by Glenn Standish (Toruntps.com) and the Director of the International House, Romek Poślednik .
Loyal United supporters Tommy Shields, Majella Hegarty, John "Bugsy" Malone and Martin Qualter wore their Chick Euro 2012 gear with pride, together with life long Ireland fan Paul Mackin from London.
The Irish soccer fans spent a number of hours in the prison meeting prisoners and answering their questions on Ireland and Irish soccer. The Q and A was followed by a game of table football between Irish fans and Polish prisoners, unfortunately this time round Poland won 3-2. We look forward to a rematch...
The day ended with the Irish teaching the prisoners an Irish football chant (Come on You Boys in Green) and the Polish prisoners teaching their Irish counterparts a Polish football anthem. (Polska Biała Czerwona - Poland, White, Red).
The visit was covered by local and national Polish media, over 24 Journalists and 5 TV Crews in total.

Diary of a Galway United Revolutionary - Part 3
The sun beats down all afternoon on the street, scorching and squinting the volunteers take on fluids, drink more coffee, enjoy an ice burger from Paul's shop and the young band across the road from Headford in North Galway blasts out "the boys are back in town" the old Thin Lizzy classic as a tribute to GUST and Galway United lads across from them.
All other manner of protest, artist, singer, songwriter, and bible thumping wannabes go up and down this magical street all day and there is nowhere i would rather be at this moment.
The Lady from Gort who received word early that morning that she was the lucky dip winner in the GUST lotto sends in her lovely sister to collect her winnings at the stand. Her poor sister informs me its an errand she could have done without as her real business was to come in to Lazlo's to pick her wedding ring and the "effin eejit" in reference to her 14 year partner and she described lovingly all the same how he had got down on his hands and knees and asked her to finally marry him. She continued to regale us with how she told the "effin eejit" to get up out of that and now here she is collecting her ring, talking about Galway United, how Gort are county champions and by the way here is a fiver for your lotto and I may win next week "handy for the wedding like" as she speeds away with her ring, daughter and the fifty euro lucky dip for her hurling loving sister.
The day ends with more chat, enthusiasm and cries of United are back as heads many heading for the stadium turn around and smile.
We pack up our trinkets, Lotto books and table. Thank yous are exchanged and depart for Pearse stadium
A beautiful day by the Corrib, in a street of happy smiling people, selling lotto and hope to Galwegians and sports followers alike while I know with comfort the message is also being delivered in Poznan many miles away.

Diary of a Galway United Revolutionary - Part 2
Saturday at dawn, the phone hoots with the sound of an incoming text message, the wife tuts at the interruption but falls asleep almost immediately.
The instructions from Poznan are clear, Be in Shop Street before 9.30 to claim your spot, Paul O'Brien has the table stored for us in his newsagents. Mike Daly will deliver the merchandise and don't forget the lotto books. Mobile numbers of two other stand in volunteers quickly follow the instructions and my day is set.
Out to my shed, gather a few pieces, a Galway United sign, some Lotto books and pens and load up the car.
As I approach the city the phone rings and Volunteer 'Domo' advises he is on his way and he will be on duty within 10 minutes.
We set up promptly, and by 11am there are 4 volunteers all proudly wearing the Green Euro2012 Eamonn Chick Deacy tribute kit.
The early calls of "Support the Galway soccer Lotto" "Stop the persecution of Galway United", "Support the Presidents club" hang in the air over the quaint early morning clean cobbled streets.
Before long the locals stop and chat and ask questions, the four green clad busy volunteers wheel out the stories, the gossip, the latest goings on.
A man from Aran recalls the day he visited Terryand and said he remembers Tommy Keane, Gerry Mullen and Johnny Glynn playing fantastic football.
He enquires repeatedly and with a rub of the stubble on his chin when are Galway United back. We duly inform him of what our plans are and before he leaves he throws us a tenner for six lotto tickets.
By twelve noon all volunteers are busy chatting, waving, shouting and greeting both locals and visitors to the city of the tribes.
Best wishes are exchanged and euro 2012 gear is modeled by a pretty Cork Lady who supports the League of Ireland. She tries two sizes in the middle of the what is now a very busy thoroughfare and visitors from Mexico, Texas and France admire. The Cork Lady hands over her €20 and says she just loves Galway.
The Volunteer ranks swell to six and the throngs of Locals, Sligo GAA fans, Stag night survivors and hen night arrivals laugh, roar, sing, cry and talk their way past our stand most taking note of our presence and many admiring our commitment to a club.

Diary of a Galway United Revolutionary - Part 1
Friday night and our main commander has left for Poland. We congregate in Cooke's pub for the weekly Galway Soccer Lotto.
The carefully hand written instructions from our ambassador in Poland are inspected. Final visits to surrounding pubs to collect any remaining lotto books are completed and the Corrib Rangers brigade lead the organization of the draw itself.
All the entries are sorted and the lotto balls are released into the drum.
The microphone is switched on and the draw begins. There is no fancy looking model, Blue eyed blonde haired dazzler to enthrall the punters just the lads from Galway United Supporters Trust, Corrib Ranger FC & Foundation FC.
It's clinical and efficient, no Jackpot winner and the four lucky dips are pulled from the drum.
A few pints, a little chit chat about the ills of Galway Football and before long the eyes light up with talk of Poznan.
Eventually we leave Cooke's with friendly handshakes with the punters on the way out and banter as we wear our United Jerseys and inform the people of the imminent comeback of our club. As I maze my way through the city lights in the Dusk and out home there is some satisfaction of a job well done and the very important instructions were followed...

Volunteer with GUST
At GUST we are always in need of more volunteers. In particular we need people to help in the following areas;
Saturday Stand; Every Saturday GUST has a stand in Galway City. On the first Saturday of every month it's in the Eyre Square Centre. On other Saturdays we use different locations. At the stand we sell Lotto tickets, Maroon Army membership, GUSt membership, merchandise and promote any looming special events. We also meet supporters, lapsed supporters and possible new supportrs. We need more people to give an hour or two at the stand. It's an enjoyable way to spend an hour or two and you'll always meet interesting people.
Sell Lotto tickets; Most of our Lotto sales are offline, person to person. Every ticket sold is a help in achieving our goals. If you can sell a few tickets a week, it all adds up and is a great help. A book of tickets can be collected; from our office at Eamonn Deacy Park, Terryland, from the Saturday Stand, or from members of the Management Committee. Our online Lotto sales are as important our offline, and if you can help promote our online Lotto, please do. We just ask that you don't spam anyone in doing so.
This Website; You can help by promoting or contributing to this website. You can promote it by telling people about it. You can mention us in your emails, although please don't include us in any spam. You can talk about us on forums, in blogs, in articles, on websites etc.
Blogging; We are looking for bloggers. If you can write regularly about Galway United, Galway football in general, League of Ireland, All-Ireland football, British football, European football, World football, or any football related topic, we'd love to hear from you. If you can write regularly, once a week, once a fortnight, or once a month get in touch. We believe that good, interesting and regular blogs can be the best way of building, and sustaining an audience for this website.
Helping at events; A large element of GUST's fundraising efforts consists of organizing and running special fundraising events. We are always interested in people who can help in this area. If you have helped organize and run any event that raised money for any other cause, and would and could like to do the same with us, please let us know. If you have never helped run an event but would like to do so, then you are more than welcome. Get in touch and we'll let you know what's coming up that you could help with.
Football; Our reason for existing is football. At the moment GUST is involved with some of the junior clubs in County Galway in an Under 19 initiative aimed at keeping players involved in the game who might stop playing. Many players stop playing at this age and we want to keep more of them involved and help them develop as players. We hope these players will form a squad to represent all of County Galway at League of Ireland level next season, and that the clubs they belong to will feel included in the venture rather than feel their players have been poached by a rival club. We also hope to have a team back in the League of Ireland in 2013. If you would like to, and feel you could contribute to this, we'd like to hear from you.
At games; This one may seem a little strange at the moment seeing as we don't have any involvement with a team at this moment, but we're confident that will change very soon. When we do we will need people to help out at the games with stuff like stewarding, selling Lotto, match programmes, merchandise etc. If you would like to help out at games, why not make contact now and get to know us. It wont be long until the show's back on the road.
If you can help with any of the above get in touch. Send us an email by clicking here and let us know how you would like to help. Make "Volunteer" the subject of the email. We will get back to you, or if you live in Galway you can talk to any member of the management committee. You can help wherever you are, you don't have to live in Galway.
