The Maroon and White Streets of Galway

It was heart warming to walk through the radiant streets of Galway today. Not only was the sun out but apparently so were Galway's football fans.

For the first time ever as I meandered through the cities crowded thoroughfares I spotted more Galway United jerseys than Man United. The streets were simply flooded with dedicated fans showing their support by donning their local club colours.

In fact it wasn't just maroon and white that bleached the cobbled lanes. The patriotic green of GUST's Euro 2012 kit could be seen everywhere. I myself was sporting the classic design and as I passed fan after fan also wearing the green charity kit, shared glances and polite nods reaffirmed the obvious.

There is a real hunger for the return of a Galway footballing outfit representing the entire city and county. Whatever guise it may take one things for sure, our numbers are growing, and our support is unfleeting...

Under 19's and the future

A special u19 committee has been put in place and includes people from clubs around North, East, South, West of Galway County and huge tracts of the City. These people come with experience of the junior and national game and some members of GUST to oversee the budgets and administration support of the u19. Their is a director of football position on this committee as well.

Facilities for training have been identified with the ongoing support of clubs, and we will look to utilise Eamonn Deacy Park, the home of Galway football for the majority of u19 games. This of course will require the support of the Local GFA who we have developed a decent relationship with over the last year, and would be hopeful of a commitment from them if we are to compete against national opposition. We have huge support from local County and City clubs particularly East United in Castlepark. Corrib Rangers in Westside and NUIG Soccer Club for the provision of facilities. We hope this will continue and thank them hugely for helping us survive in the game over difficult times The Future could be very bright if everything comes off, lets put the past behind us now

We have also identified 2 areas in the city as possible grounds, and have approached local politicians and the City Council to allocate one of them as a space for a full size pitch capable of hosting some matches, and an area we can eventually put lights on for training purposes and call our own. We do feel there is a plethora of all weather facilities that is way more cost effective to rent as opposed to getting into maintenance or extensive fundraising on capital investment that we dont need.

This website, Galwaysoccer.com is having the effect of harnessing extra income from around the globe and this will be of huge benefit to the ethos of having many many contributors and not depending on any one sponsor. A whopping €285k of the €300k it cost to run Galway United last season came from supporters. Now thats what i call Loyalty

All this has come out of the forums, meetings in the Claddagh Hall, and with contacts and discussions ongoing over the last 4 months.

Match ups between parents, Club officials and GUST have been instigated by senior people in the local game and the parents in particular have expressed a wish for an outlet that stops young people feeling the need to go to Dublin to play at a higher standard.

The u19 all Galway representative team is hugely important to the future of Galway football and will be enshrined in the new ethos of developing a real club for everyone to support.

Special offer for Maroon Army and Galwaysoccer Lotto subscription

The Maroon Army Scheme is a very important fundraiser for the club GUST hope to be part of in the League of Ireland in 2013. While money generated through sponsorship, match day, special events etc. will play their part in financing the season, it's the steady weekly income from the Maroon Army and the Galwaysoccer Lotto that will make the difference between struggling through the season from one week to the next and having something in reserve. Having a steady income every week of the year makes the whole thing far more viable.

The Management Committee have decided to do a special deal for the combined Maroon Army and Galwaysoccer Lotto fundraisers. At the moment there are 4 levels of commitment in the Maroon Army detailed here. Anyone who commits to pay €120 a year can now get a year's subscription to the Lotto for an extra €50, thats entry into 52 draws for the price of 25. Whoever commits €240 a year to the Maroon Army can get a years Lotto for an extra €40, €360 to the Maroon Army gets you Lotto for €30, and €480 to the Maroon Army gets you Lotto for €20, or entry into 52 draws for the price of 10.

I really hate special offers that are for new subscribers only and anyone who is already availing of the service has to continue on a lesser deal, so this one is not like that. This offer is for anyone who is already in the Maroon Army scheme as well as anyone who wants to join. If you are a member of the Maroon Army you can add a years subscription to the Galwaysoccer Lotto for the appropriate amount.

At the moment a years subscription to the Galwaysoccer Lotto costs €80, less than €2 a week. For anyone who has such a subscription you can now join the Maroon Army for similar discount depending on which subscription level you would like. That will be an extra €90, €200, €310 or €420.

If you want to support a team thats compatible with our "One City, One County, One Club" aim, playing in Eamonn Deacy Park in 2013 then please make a monetary commitment to that goal. At the very least play Lotto every week. It only costs €2, a coin. You'd throw one at something that was annoying you and not miss it. A years subscription to the Galwaysoccer Lotto costs €80, less than €2 a week. A years membership to the Maroon Army can be had for €120, a little over €2 a week. A Maroon Army membership and a years Lotto subscription can be had for as little as €170, which is a little over €3 a week, less than the smallest € note.
